Wildlife Photography: The Hunt Without the Eating

Wildlife photography is, at its core, a form of hunting.

The main differences are that the weapon costs considerably more, the ammunition comes in memory cards, and the animal gets to walk away with its dignity intact.

Most wildlife photographers spend their lives wandering through forests, wetlands and coastlines looking for creatures to shoot.

Photographically, of course.

Explaining that distinction quickly becomes important when you’re standing in a field carrying a camera with a lens large enough to concern passing members of the public.

My adventures have taken me from the British Wildlife Centre to the vast landscapes of South Africa, where wildlife exists on a scale that makes British animals look somewhat understated.
